För runt två veckor sedan publicerades en väldigt mjuk och fin intervju med Henning Mankell i Göteborgs-Posten, nedskriven av Ingrid Norrman. De pratade om Mankells cancer, om den ständiga tröttheten och känslan av en tid på väg att ta slut, och han sa: ”En av hemligheterna med livet är att välja det man inte gör.”

Lite längre in i texten pratade han om idéer, allt han såg framför sig, allt han ville skriva och berätta: ”…det är ju skrivandet som gör oss till människor. Jag kan berätta för er och ni för mig om vår fruktan, längtan, våra drömmar och öden. En katt kan inte dela en berättelse om sina drömmar med en annan katt, men det kan vi människor. Den berättande människan, det är det vi är. Och att vara en del av det, det är väl det som är mitt liv.”

Han sa att ”Robinson Crusoe” är den bästa bok som blivit skriven. Han läste den första gången som sju- eller åttaåring, och sextio år senare verkar han fortfarande ha blivit genuint entusiastisk när den kom på tal: ”Läsaren är med hela tiden som Robinsons osynliga skugga. Rör sig på ön tillsammans med honom, löser problemen med honom. Det är fullkomligt genialt. Det finns ingen bättre roman!”.

Det hänger kvar, just de där orden, hur många gånger man än läser intervjun. För man glömmer ju det där ibland, att alla berättelser börjar med kärleken till en annan berättelse. Att före alla skrivupplevelser under ett helt liv fanns en riktigt stor läsupplevelse för ett barn.

Inatt dog Henning Mankell. Han berättade in i det sista. Så även om nästan alla dagar nog är bra dagar att läsa Robinson Crusoe högt för en stor eller liten människa som man tycker mycket om, så är just idag kanske extra bra.
